Books that empower us.

In the BookTube community there are many events called ‘read-a-thons’ that are hosted all year long where BookTubers set a time frame of a few days or a week to read as many books as possible about a specific topic, but BookTube has never seen a read-a-thon like this before. #FEMPOWERATHON is a read-a-thon with the sole purpose to read feminist books or books that feature powerful women and/or diversity. #FEMPOWERATHON was created by BookTubers Taylor Stanley and Nicole Craswell whose overall message was to encompass the female spirit. This year #FEMPOWERATHON will be running from October 8th through the 14th, they will have many other guest hosts, bookstagram influencers, sprints and more!

In every read-a-thon there are also challenges involved, #FEMPOWERATHON’s challenges are:

Mimp Mag #FEMPOWERATHON challenge recommendations:

A fantasy with a female heroine: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo or Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass

Reread a book with a female character you're thankful for: Harry Potter series (Hermione Granger)

A horror/ thriller with a female lead: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin, We were liars by E. Lockhart.

A feminist novel that was ahead of its time: The Handmaid’s Tale by Maragret Atwood

A book of poetry by a woman: bloom by Enya Best or Depression and other Magic Tricks by Sabrina Benaim.

A woman unlike yourself: This is a very hard one to give a recommendation for because each of our lovely readers it’s different in every way (whether it’s race, sexuality, class, life experiences, etc.). So we’ll skip on a recommendation for this challenge, but I personally chose The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.

An intersectional feminist book: We should all be feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Optional group book: Moxie by Jennifer Matthieu
