Walkin’ in a Wingin’ Wonderland (OMGYOUREYES, LITERALLY)

Three bold yet wearable eyeliner looks, just in time for your glam New Year's Eve Party!

We’ve all heard the saying, “eyes are the window to the soul”. They can speak for you without words, they can Salsa dance... Okay, maybe it’s not that serious, but every woman’s eyes are definitely her best asset. If there’s one thing I’m grateful for during the winter season, it’s not wearing sunglasses.

Eyes, no matter the shapes, sizes or colours, are always pretty. I don’t mean to make a spectacle of myself, but if there’s one thing I get compliments on, it’s my eyes and my eyeliner. So I figured I would share the gift with which I have been ever so blessed, with all the loveliest ladies. This season, my New Year’s gift to you is three bold yet wearable eyeliner looks (and how to get the perfect cat-eye)!

Getting your perfect cat-eye:

You will need three things: good eyeliner, good lighting, and patience. I know, you were probably hoping for some magic product that would do all the work for you, but why not do the work yourself, practice really does make perfect.

1. Buy gel or crème eyeliner and an eyeliner brush.

Honestly, all the best products can be purchased at the drugstore, and they all come with a brush. These liners are easy to work with and very pigmented. Another reason I love them is because of how easy they are to remove, especially if a few mistakes are made.

Yup, you heard right. Not only can pulling on your lids cause premature wrinkles, but your liner won’t be straight or sit properly once your skin is no longer held taught.

3. Angles are everything.

I find doing eyeliner much easier when I have both of my eyes open and light right in front of me. I like to get real close to my mirror, slightly tilt my head back, and draw my wings on with my chin up. After all, confidence is key. It’s all about finding what works best for you.

First Look: Have Yourself a Marilyn Little New Year

This classic cat-eye look is inspired by the golden age of Hollywood. I’m wearing a rounded cat-eye for an innocent look, but kept the sharp are 45 degree angle wing that Ms. Monroe has made ever so famous. This gives a sweet and sultry look to your liner. Happy Birthday indeed, Mr. President.

Line the eyes with your favourite eyeliner. Start thin at the inner corner and thicken the liner as you reach the outer corner of the eye. Create your wing on the 45-degree angle, connect the lines smoothly, and fly baby bird. Pair your liner with a champagne eye shadow on the lid and dark brown eye shadow in the crease and outer ‘V’ of the eyes. Keep the crease shadow rounded and follow the eye’s natural socket cavity. Smudge some black liner into the lower lash line for a smouldering look. Finish off with some flirty half-lashes and you’re all set.

Second Look: Arabian Nights and Holiday Lights

This cultural based look focuses on preciseness and perfection. An Arabic inspired eye look is perfect for any party or special event you will be attending. I’m wearing an Arabic cat-eye, very thin along the upper lash line. It starts from the inner corner of the eye and extends out to a thin, sharp line. Switch the wing’s angle from 45 to 25-35 degrees to accentuate or create almond shaped eyes. You look fierce, Princess Jasmine. Time to lure in your prince or princess.

Line the eyes with your favourite eyeliner. Start at the inner corner and draw a thin line all the way to the outer corner. Create your wing on a 25-35 degree angle and make it as long as you like. Next, line your eye where the tear duct is, and create a slight tapered point. Add a gold eye shadow to the lid, a copper eye shadow to the crease, and a dark brown eye shadow to the outer ‘V’. Now blend away, babe. To really make your eyes pop, add black liner to the waterline and lower lash line, making sure to connect both inner and outer corners. Finish off with some full or half-lashes fit for a princess.

Third Look: Doe in the Snow

This is an eyeliner look that screams “cute” and is super easy to create. I’m wearing a double cat-eye for a sweet and animated look. This look focuses a lot on bottom lashes and liner detail. It’s perfect for a day of shopping or a night out with friends.

Line the eyes with your favourite eyeliner. Make sure to keep it thin and uniform from the inner corner to the outer corner. Taper the inner corner to make your eyes look “taller” or wider. Create your first wing on a 45-degree angle, that way you leave enough room to create a second wing below it. Create the second wing at a 35-degree angle. Dust silver eye shadow on the lids, a charcoal or black eye shadow to the crease and outer ‘V’ of the eyes, following the eye’s natural socket cavity. Add some silver shadow to the inner corners of your eyes for a pretty highlight. Finally, finish off with some full or half-lashes and apply a generous amount of mascara to your bottom lashes.
