The Importance of a New Horizon
“The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our experiences and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” – Christopher McCandless
What does it mean to have a new horizon, a new and different sun? Summer is already here meaning many of us are making plans with friends and family with the hopes of seeking out our adventurous soul. These warm, breezy days are usually filled with brightly colored popsicles, fun yelps and splashes coming from a nearby pool and lots of sunscreen. Although many dream of that beautiful, fuzzy summer romance hoping to find the Danny to their Sandy (Grease references are a must this summer) [Editor’s note: or a Noah to their Ally the notebook is also reference worthy], some are looking elsewhere to find their “Danny”.
Who exactly is this Danny I speak of? Not so much who, but rather what. These places we speak of are tree filled landscapes, fresh smelling rivers, lakes, and oceans, high toppling mountains and hills. But they are also much more than that. Such places to some are a disconnection from society, conformity, normality, you name it. It’s an escape, a peaceful and adventurous escape from a year or so of treacherous schoolwork and activities. In these places you are allowed to let loose and unwind allowing the earth to be your guidance in this unraveling happiness settling inside you.
However, adventure is fun because it is a “to each their own” type of deal. The range scope of the word “adventure” itself stretches for miles. To you adventure might mean going camping in Yellowstone National Park but to someone else it could mean going to the ocean or a long car ride to an unknown destination. All of these have excitement in common, excitement for something different, for a journey that will be filled with events that are unpredictable yet lively.
Few experiences are more worthwhile and exhilarating than adventures. Through these explorations we familiarize ourselves with different people, foods, lands, cultures, etc. Through all of this we develop a subconscious goal. Make it something different this summer; make it about doing something new each day or week. Adventure and change are medicine for the soul, something that is okay to love and treasure.
This summer should be memorable and different. Don’t stay cooped up in your bedroom reading all day (although really, there is nothing wrong with reading all day is there?), make sure you experience the outdoors and allow the warm sun to recognize your face and name.
Whether it is the local ice cream parlor, the ocean, the farm market, or the grassy pastures let your adventurous soul roam and find something new to experience and love. This summer make misadventure your Danny [Or Noah].
