The “Oldies” hippie Playlist

HAPPY FRIDAY NIGHT!

When I hear the word “Flower child” I think of the countless music festivals today dedicated to the bohemian style; festivals where girls wear their cutest “hippie” outfits with complimenting flower crowns. I think of those that we dub “free-spirits”, following their own ways of life. But most of all I think back to where the term originated.

The bohemian style has been around for hundreds of years, and has gained countless influences, most notably the 1960s counterculture movement. In fact the term “flower-child” is synonymous with the word “hippie”. The counterculture movement was a defiance of the social norms and pressures placed upon society. It was a rebellion of sorts.

This movement was heavily influenced by the controversial music of the time, with lyrics about defying society and “doing your own thing”. Many of the songs at the time had lyrics connected to war protests as well.

It seemed like a good idea to go back to the roots of what we consider today “boho”!

[Editor's note: Most times today, "Hippie music" seems to be seen as layed back and chill but they forget about some of the really awsome songs from the 60's and 70's. This playist, in other words, is not your typical whimsical peace on earth vibe]

Here are some of my favorite songs of the 60’s along with some quotes from the songs to go with them!

1. Paint it Black - The Rolling Stones

“I look inside myself and see my heart is black”

2. Fortunate Son – Creedence Clearwater

“It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no”

3. Imagine – John Lennon

“Imagine all the people

Living life in peace...”

4. Spirit in the Sky – Norman Green

“When I die and they lay me to rest

I'm gonna go to the place that's the best”

5. I’m a Believer – The Monkees

“I'm in love, I'm a believer!

I couldn't leave her if I tried.”

6. (Sittin’ On) the dock of the bay – Otis Redding

“Look like nothin's gonna change

Everything, still remains the same”

7.Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones

“It's just a shot away”

8. Hooked on a Feeling – Blue Suede

“I'm high on believing

That you're in love with me”

Best one to finish things off ^
